We are thrilled to introduce you to our journey through the colorful and educational world of Sesame Street. As a student passionate about the impact of educational media on early childhood development, we chose Sesame Street for its iconic status and groundbreaking approach to learning.

This project a collaboration project with Alex Cho

The Challenge for this project is to create an animated segment for Sesame Street. This project will combine all our knowledge of 2D and 3D animation as well as the hand skills learned in Animation Techniques to create a whimsical, tactile, and fun animation for one of the world’s most successful franchises. We decided to create a short educational music video about rainbows and colors in rainbows.

Song & Music

Songs: Alex Cho &Hannah Nguyen ( with the help of ChatGPT)

Vocals & Music: Kelly Warner

Hey, look up there! It’s a rainbow!

(Verse)
When the rain stops, look up high,
Sun and rain give a colorful hi-five,
Colors bending, what a sight!
That's how rainbows come alive!

(Chorus)
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue,

Indigo and violet too!

Rainbow colors for me and you,

Seven colors are shining through!

(Chorus)
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue,

Indigo and violet too!

Rainbow colors for me and you,

Rainbow, rainbow, we love you!

Style

For the style, we use mixed media that combines live footage, puppetry, cel, 2D and 3D animation together.

Color Palette

The color scheme is inspired by the rainbow colors, cute, fun and vibrant. That will fit with the educational video purpose for kids. Also, the bright colors can easily get more attention and make people excited.

Proposed Design Approach

For the style approach, we try to experience with different art mediums to find out the best solutions for the educational purpose.

Notes

We have to rethink the story and keep in mind this is an educational video for kids. The imagery has to be big and clear.

Storyboard

The narrative will illustrate the visual corresponding to the song. It has to show the education about rainbow.

Final Style Frames

Style frames Development

First Pass Animation

This is all of the work-in-process and behind the scenes footages of us working through the project.

Important notes:

While working on this pass, we’ve recognized that an educational video has to have clear images and animations that are engaging to the kids. Also, it has to include correct information that kids could learn from.

Notes

Overall, it needs some more style frames and animation towards the colors part. Some animations could be more clear and more expressive.

Behind The Scene

This is all of the work-in-process and behind the scenes footages of us working through the project.

Cel Animation - Photoshop

Compositing - Nuke

We’ve been working with Kelly Warner since the beginning of the project to finalize the song, the track, and the music.

The Final

After 3 weeks of working with Alex on this project, it was finally done and we are so proud of how it turned out! This has been such a learning curve. We experienced all of the different mediums: cel animation, live footage, puppetry, 2D and 3D. We also combined all of the techniques from design, animation, and compositing. It was a lot of fun and we can’t wait to see what the audience learns from our video!

Thank you!
